A court in Bangladesh has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in absentia to life imprisonment and death for crimes against humanity.
The court found the former prime minister guilty on all five charges of crimes against humanity.
A judge said, "Sheikh Hasina and her main aides have been found guilty of crimes against humanity. Based on evidence against them, the Bangladeshi court sentenced Sheikh Hasina to life imprisonment until natural death on the first charge - inciting violence, ordering murder, and inaction to prevent violence from happening
Meanwhile, based on several other charges, the court sentenced the former prime minister to death.
Hasina has been in India since August 5th last year. At that time, she fled Bangladesh against the backdrop of student protests.
In August 2024, after student protests and large-scale riots, the Sheikh Hasina government, which had been in power for 2009-2014, was overthrown, and an interim government was subsequently established in Bangladesh. Hasina went to India. The protests and the government's attempts to quell them have resulted in over 1500 deaths and more than 25000 injuries in Bangladesh.
